FAQ
Fridge Is On but Not Cooling
A common issue in GE refrigerators is when the interior lights and fans are running, but the unit isn't cooling. This often points to a failed main control board especially in newer models with inverter compressors. GE uses sophisticated electronic boards to manage compressor speed, and when this board fails, the fridge appears on but stays warm. Diagnosing this requires testing the board's voltage output to the compressor and may require a replacement.
Freezer Cold but Refrigerator Warm
In many GE models with a single evaporator, if the freezer stays cold but the fridge warms up, the issue often lies in the evaporator fan motor or a blocked air duct. Another known problem is ice buildup around the air damper, especially in high-humidity climates. If the fan stops working or airflow is obstructed, the fridge won't receive enough cold air, even though the freezer works properly.
Clicking or Ticking Sound Repeatedly
GE refrigerators, particularly older Top-Freezer models, are known for a distinct clicking sound when the compressor relay fails. In newer models, rapid clicking can also come from a failing inverter board or compressor startup circuit. While occasional clicks are normal during cycling, constant clicking without cooling indicates a startup failure and should be inspected by a technician.
Frost or Ice Buildup in Freezer Compartment
Even in GE Frost-Free models, excessive frost buildup may occur due to a failed defrost heater, sensor, or control board. When the automatic defrost cycle fails, ice accumulates on the evaporator coils, restricting airflow and causing inconsistent temperatures. This is especially common in GE Profile models with rear-mounted evaporators. A multi-point diagnostic is needed to test defrost system continuity.
Water or Moisture Under Crisper Drawers
Water pooling beneath drawers is usually the result of a clogged defrost drain. GE fridges route defrost water through narrow drain channels that can easily get blocked by food particles or mold. In some models, the drain heater (if present) may also fail, leading to freeze-ups and overflows. Cleaning the drain tube and verifying heater function are critical to preventing recurrent leaks.
