Cooling Failure After Power Outage
Kenmore refrigerators, especially digital inverter models, are sometimes known to stop cooling after a short power interruption. Even though the lights and control panel work, the compressor may not restart due to a failed inverter board or tripped overload protector. Some models require a manual reset, while others need board replacement. This issue is more common in Kenmore Elite units with LG-manufactured components.
Refrigerator Freezing Food in the Crisper Drawers
A known issue in side-by-side and French door Kenmore models is overly cold air accumulating near the bottom drawers, freezing produce. This typically occurs when the air damper is stuck open or if the return air duct is blocked by frost or packaging. Kenmore fridges with multi-zone controls require recalibration of sensors or damper motor replacement to restore proper balance.
Ice Maker Overflows or Jams Frequently
Kenmore ice makers, especially in older top-freezer models, are prone to overfilling or freezing into solid blocks. This is often caused by a failing inlet valve that doesn't close fully, or a misaligned fill tube. In newer models, the onboard sensor may misread bin levels due to fog or frost, causing overflow. Cleaning the sensor and inspecting valve timing can prevent repeat issues.
Fridge Runs but Lights Are Dim or Flickering
If your Kenmore unit cools fine but interior lighting is weak or flashes, it may have a failing LED driver board or a loose connection in the door switch. In models with motion-sensing lights, even slight misalignment can cause strobing. LED replacements for Kenmore are model-specific, and matching voltage and connectors is essential to avoid further electrical issues.
Water Dispenser Slow or Stops Working
Kenmore models with internal water filters often experience flow issues when the filter is clogged or not seated properly. If water flow gradually decreases or stops entirely, checking the bypass plug or replacing the filter with a compatible OEM model usually restores function. In dual-valve systems, a weak solenoid may also need replacement.
Clicking Noise Followed by Warm Compartment
A clicking or ticking sound near the compressor area followed by loss of cooling is a classic sign of a failed relay start device particularly in older Kenmore models with Whirlpool-built sealed systems. If left unresolved, this minor issue can escalate to full compressor failure. Replacing the relay early is inexpensive and prevents major repairs.
Frost Buildup in the Freezer Despite Being Frost-Free
Some Kenmore frost-free units develop internal ice buildup due to a malfunctioning defrost thermostat or heater. When the defrost cycle doesn't complete, ice slowly accumulates on the evaporator coils, leading to blocked airflow and warm fridge sections. A multimeter test of the defrost components will confirm the fault and guide replacement.
Unusual Vibrations or Rattling from Cabinet
Kenmore units with bottom-mounted compressors can develop cabinet vibrations due to loose fan brackets, worn rubber mounts, or a failing condenser fan motor. These noises may worsen during defrost cycles or when the compressor is under heavy load. Technicians should inspect internal bracing and apply insulation or adjust mounts to reduce noise transfer.
